Definition: Định nghĩa - Nếu như chúng ta tra từ điển, collocation có nghĩa là sự sắp đặt theo thứ tự tự nhiên/ thông thường. Collocations không thể gọi là từ ghép (khác compound noun). - Một collocation là một cụm gồm 2 hay nhiều từ thường hay đi cùng với nhau, và theo một trật tự nhất định. Chúng không có quy tắc hay một công thức cụ thể. Ví dụ: + latest gossip (adjective + noun) + package holiday (noun + noun) + have a great time (verb + adjective + noun) + fast food (adjective + noun) + discuss calmly (verb + adverb) + quick meal (adjective + noun) + hand in an assignment (verb + preposition + noun) 2. Some confusing constructions: Ví dụ về cách kết hợp + Thành công to lớn: Largely successful/ greatly successful (sai) - Hugely successful (đúng) + Đi nghỉ: Go holiday (sai) - Go on holiday (đúng) + Mưa to: Strong rain (sai) - Heavy rain (đúng) II. How to find, record and learn collocations? 1. General tips: Hướng dẫn chung - Có quá nhiều cách kết hợp từ khiến cho ta cảm thấy lúng túng khi phải đưa ra lựa chọn. Trong trường hợp này, hãy lấy danh từ làm trung tâm (key word) để tra cứu và lựa chọn những động từ, tính từ có thể kết hợp với nó. - Khuyến khích ghi chép lại những collocations thường gặp, càng ghi chép nhiều và thường xuyên càng tốt. Thời gian trên lớp có thể dùng để giúp người học nhớ lại những collocations đã sưu tập được và trao đổi với bạn bè hoặc giáo viên để bổ sung những collocations mới. Một cách nhớ các collocations là kẻ bảng như sau: Động từ kết hợp Tính từ kết hợp Danh từ chính được với danh từ được với danh từ - Với những học sinh ở trình độ thấp thì việc giúp họ chia các nhóm từ theo chủ đề sẽ hiệu quả hơn. Các chủ đề này có thể theo thứ tự như trong sách giáo khoa, ví dụ như jobs, family, food, v.v. Những học sinh ở trình độ trung binh sẽ thích được học collocation theo các từ khóa (keyword) như work, holiday, v.v. Những học sinh ở trình độ cao lại muốn học theo cấu trúc ngữ pháp như verb + noun, noun + adjective, v.v. Việc ghi chép sao cho có hệ thống, dễ học, dễ nhớ, dễ tra cứu thực sự là vấn đề đối với nhiều người học. Vì vậy, nên để cách một vài ô trống hay dòng để bổ sung những collocations mới mà chúng ta tự tìm được. - Nhiều học sinh diễn đạt nghĩa trong Tiếng Anh giống hệt như trong tiếng mẹ đẻ bằng cách dịch từng từ (word-by-word translation or literal translation). Vì vậy, với những cách diễn đạt không thể dịch sang tiếng Anh, nên tập trung làm rõ những nét đối lập, khác biệt rõ ràng thay vì chỉ ra những nét tương đồng giữa các cách diễn đạt trong tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt. Hãy giải thích lý do và chỉ rõ sự khác biệt trong ngữ nghĩa của từng cách diễn đạt để giúp mình tự tin và sử dụng Tiếng Anh chính xác. 2. Specific tips: Hướng dẫn cụ thể - Khi gặp một cụm từ mới (collocation) thì những học sinh ở trình độ thấp thường chỉ tập trung tìm nghĩa của những từ họ không biết mà không chú ý đến cả cụm từ được kết hợp theo collocation. Điều này là do chúng ta thường học, ghi chép và ghi nhớ từ mới theo nghĩa dịch một cách đơn lẻ và không có văn cảnh. - Trong khi đó, những bạn ở trình độ cao thường bỏ qua nó, không chú ý đến sự kết hợp từ vựng (collocation) trong đoạn văn. - Cả hai cách nhìn nhận trên đều do người học thiếu nhận thức về tầm quan trọng của collocation. COLLOCATIONS - Người học cần phải học cách học từ vựng theo collocation để có thể sử dụng từ đúng cách. - Thử tập thói quen chỉ ra các collocations trong đoạn văn xem: When Clifford met Annie, they found one thing in common. They both love lists. So together they have written the ultimate list, a list of rules for their marriage. This prenuptial agreement itemizes every detail of their lives together, from shopping to sex. Timothy Laurence met them in Florida in the apartment they share. - Nên chọn các bài đọc có nội dung phù hợp với trình độ của mình, từ ngữ và thông tin cập nhật để có thể học được cách sử dụng từ sao cho tự nhiên và chuẩn xác. 3. Why to learn collocations? Tại sao cần học Collocations? - Ngôn ngữ nói sẽ trở nên tự nhiên và dễ hiểu hơn. - Sẽ có nhiều sự lựa chọn và cách diễn đạt phong phú. - Thật dễ dàng cho bộ não để nhớ và sử dụng ngôn ngữ một cách hay nhất. III. Kinds of collocations: Các loại Collocations Có một vài hình thức khác nhau được tạo thành từ sự kết hợp giữa động từ (Verb), danh từ (Noun) và tính từ (adjective). Có thể minh họa như sau: 1. adverb + adjective 2. adjective + noun 3. noun + noun t at 11am. 4. noun + verb 5. verb + noun prisoner was hanged for committing murder. 6. verb + expression with preposition had to return home because we had run out of money. 7. verb + adverb ary whispered softly in John’s ear.
