This is particularly the case for whites interacting with racial or ethnic minorities and nonwhites interacting with minority groups other than their own. About a quarter of white adults say they interact with blacks and Hispanics a lot in their day-to-day life. Among blacks, 26% say they have a lot of interaction with people who are Hispanic, while one-in- five Hispanics say they have frequent interaction with people who are black. About one in-ten whites, blacks and Hispanics say they interact with Asians a lot in their daily life. A majority of Asians say they have frequent daily interaction with whites, more than the share of blacks and Hispanics who say the same. About one-in-four Asians say they have a lot of interaction with people who are Hispanic and 15% say the same about people who are black. Asians are less likely than whites, blacks and Hispanics to say they have a lot of interaction with people in their own group. The extent to which Americans interact with various racial or ethnic groups reflects, at least in part, the shares of each group in the population. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the question from 39 to 45: While experts can estimate what the economic fallout from a pandemic such as the coronavirus will be, the precise impact will vary based on how many people are affected, how severely it hits, and which societal interventions are necessary to contain its spread. Financial projections for COVID-19 run the gamut. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, an entity with 36 member countries, estimated earlier this month that a long-lasting and severe coronavirus pandemic that spreads throughout Asia, Europe and North America could cut the global growth rate to 1.5-percent in 2020. That is roughly half the growth the world economy would otherwise achieve. A separate analysis by the consulting firm McKinsey & Company offers a similar outlook. Its research suggests that a more severe COVID-19 pandemic, in which city and suburban residents would have to significantly change their work habits and otherwise distance themselves socially for six to eight weeks, could cut global GDP in half, to between 1% percent and 1.5%. Increasingly, those projections look too rosy for the situation that is now unfolding. Already, roughly 1 in 3 Americans are being ordered to stay indoors, creating a huge drag on consumer demand and worker productivity. Goldman Sachs estimates that as many as 2.25 million Americans will make their initial filing for unemployment benefits this week, a roughly eight-fold increase from last week. The chief U.S. economist for Oxford Economics, Greg Daco, told the New York Times last week that a recession is all but inevitable. He estimates that GDP will sink 0.4% in the first quarter before plunging 12% in the second quarter. Goldman Sachs offered an even more dire estimate, suggesting a second-quarter decline of 24%. A century ago, the economic toll from the Spanish Flu was not particularly long-lasting. However, no one can say for certain whether that will be the case this time around. Certainly, the more effective governments in the U.S. and abroad are in facilitating medical care and reducing the rate of transmission, the more muted the economic impact will be. (Adapted from Question 39: Which of the following best serves as the title for the article? A. COVID-19 in comparison with Spanish Flu B. Experts’ estimation of COVID-19 C. The Impact of COVID-19 D. Goldman Sachs estimates that GDP will decrease 12% in the second quarter. C. The precise impact of the coronavirus will vary. D. 2.25 million Americans will ask for unemployment benefits this week. Question 45: What can be done to minimize economic impact of COVID-19? A. Stop working and moving abroad B. Effective medical care and low rate of transmission C. Saying something for certain about the pandemic D. Comparing it with Spanish Flu Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct word(s) for each of the blanks from 46 to 50: Several countries across the globe offer benefits to parents (46) ___ have more children. Some of these policies even directly encourage their citizens to procreate, while others are aimed at providing for families who can’t afford to have kids on their own. (47) ___ officials made many of these policies with their hearts in the right place, they only contribute to the problem of overpopulation. Parents might not have kids for the tax benefit alone (although some undoubtedly do), but they aren’t discouraged by government (48) ___ either. Sometimes, these policies mean that parents with more kids create more income than those without kids. Changing these policies won’t come easy, as many families (49) ___ on them for a sustainable income. Still, we need to look at tax benefits and other government policies regarding one of the overpopulation solutions. One method of changing policy might be to reward families who decide to have two or (50) ___ children with tax breaks.
