  1. SEQUENCE OF TENSES PART 1: SEQUENCE OF TENSES IN ADVERBIAL CLAUSE OF TIME 1. DẤU HIỆU NHẬN BIẾT MỆNH ĐỀ TRẠNG NGỮ CHỈ THỜI GIAN - Mệnh đề trạng ngữ chỉ thời gian: - Before, after, as, just as, as soon as, once, scarcely/ hardly when = no sooner than (vừa lúc thì), by the time, since, till, until, when, whenever, while - Đứng đầu hoặc giữa câu Ex 1: He was watching TV when I cam./ When I came, he was watching TV. Ex 2: By the time my mother came back, I had finished all my homework. 2. CÁC LOẠI MỆNH ĐỀ TRẠNG NGỮ CHỈ THỜI GIAN a. Hiện tại  tương lai đơn (Từ nối: when, until, till, as soon as) Ex 1: The doctor will examine the patient as soon as he gets. Ex 2: I will wait here until she comes back. Ex 3: When I see her tomorrow, I will tell her a story. b. Hiện tại  hiện tại (Từ nối: when) Chỉ một thói quen, sự thật hiển nhiên. Ex: We always take our umbrella with us when it rains. c. Hiện tại  tương lai hoàn thành (Từ nối: when, by the time, by + future time) Nhấn mạnh tính hoàn thành của hành động tương lai. Ex 1: By the time he comes back, we will have finished our work. Ex 2: By the end of next year, he will have written two novels. d. Hiện tại  mệnh lệnh thức (Từ nối: when, until, before) Ex 1: Call Jane you see her. Ex 2: Wait here until it stops raining. Ex 3: Think carefully before you answer my questions. e. Hiện tại  tương lai tiếp diễn (Từ nối: when) Chỉ hành động sẽ đang diễn ra ở tương lai Ex: When she gets home, her children will be playing in the yard. f. Hiện tại hoàn thành  tương lai (Từ nối: when, as soon as, after): Hành động mệnh đề thời gian xảy ra trước hành động mệnh đề chính. Ex: I will tell you it is good or not after I have tired it. g. Quá khứ  quá khứ (Từ nối: when, as): Hai hành động xảy ra kế tiếp nhau hoặc các hành động xảy ra theo một trình tự được kể lại. Ex: When I heard a knock at the door last night, I walked to the door and opened it. h. Quá khứ  quá khứ hoàn thành (Từ nối: when, after, before, by the time, until): Nhấn mạnh hành động xảy ra trước một hành động/ thời điểm ở quá khứ. Ex 1: The train had already left when/ by the time/ before I arived at the station. Ex 2: I hadn’t seen him until he visited my company last week. i. Quá khứ  quá khứ tiếp diễn (Từ nối: When, while, as): Nhấn mạnh hành động đang xảy ra thì hành động khác xen vào. Ex 1: When I arrived, she was watching TV. Ex 2: The telephone rang while I was having a bath. 1
  2. k. Quá khứ  Hiện tại hoàn thành/ Hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn (Từ nối: since): Nhấn mạnh hành động xảy ra từ quá khứ đến hiện tại. Ex: She has studied/ has been studying English since she was 5 years old. m. Quá khứ tiếp diễn  quá khứ tiếp diễn (Từ nối: while, when): Nhấn mạnh hai hành động cùng song song xảy ra ở quá khứ. Ex: Last night, while I was learning my lesson, my bother was playing games. n. Quá khứ hoàn thành  quá khứ (Từ nối: as soon as, after): Nhấn mạnh hành động mệnh đề thời gian xảy ra và hoàn thành trước hành động hoặc thời điểm quá khứ. Ex: After he had finished his work, he came back home. NOTE: Không dùng thì tương lai trong mệnh đề trạng ngữ chỉ thời gian. Ex: When I see him tomorrow, I will give him your present.
