  1. REPORTED SPEECH WITH TO-INFINITIVES AND GERUNDS I/. To-infinitive Khi những câu phát biểu/ mệnh lệnh được tường thuật với các động từ sau, ta sử dụng to-V0 kèm theo: a/. V + to-V0 agree expect promise wish decide guarantee refuse propose demand hope say determine offer want Ex: - “OK. I’ll give you a lift”, said John. → John agreed to give me a lift. b/. V + O + to-V0 advise encourage order require allow expect permit tell ask help persuade urge beg invite remind want command instruct request warn Ex: - “Don’t forget to send Mark a birthday card, Kate”, I said. → I reminded Kate to send Mark a birthday card. II/. Gerund Khi những câu phát biểu được tường thuật với các động từ sau, ta sử dụng V-ing kèm theo a/. V + V-ing admit stop deny suggest propose (dự định) try request Ex: - “I didn’t take your money”, said Jimmy. → Jimmy denied taking my money. b/. V + prep. + V-ing apologize ( to + S.O) for insist on approve of look forward to confess to think of dream of Ex: - “I’ll definitely buy this house”, said Peter. → Peter insisted on buying that house. c/. V + S.O + prep. + V-ing accuse S.O of thank S.O for blame S.O for warn S.O against congratulate S.O on criticize S.O for (not) prevent/ stop S.O from Ex: - “Well done, Jane. You’ve passed the exam”. → I congratulated Jane on passing the exam.
  2. EXERCISE I/. Complete the sentences to report what was said, using a to-V0 or V- ing. 1. “You'd better look for a new job, Andrew.” Jane advised 2. “It was nice of you to invite me to your birthday party. Thanks very much.” Mike thanked 3. “I must have made a mistake in the calculations.” Mr. Forest admitted 4. “I'll pay for the meal.” Sarah insisted 5. “Perhaps we can go to Paris for the weekend.” Neil suggested 6. “I can get you there in good time.” Jim guaranteed 7. “I'm sorry I couldn't come to visit you last summer.” Kate apologized 8. “We'll organize the Christmas party.” They promised 9. “I hear you won the championship. Congratulations!” Dane congratulated 10. “I wish I'd asked for his name and address.” I regretted 11. “You're selfish.” Jane accused 12. “All right. We will meet the student representatives.” The teachers agreed 13. “You mustn't drink too much caffeine.” Marta warned 14. “If all goes to plan, I'll study medicine.” Rachel hoped 15. “We should take the jumper back to the shop.” Jack recommended II/. Report these sentences. Make any necessary changes to verb tense, pronouns, etc. 1. 'We have found the missing girl,' said the police last night. 2. 'I'll drop you from the team if you don't train harder,' said the captain. 3. 'I'd buy the big tin if I were you,' said the grocer.
  3. 4. 'Here are the car keys. You'd better wait in the car,' he said to her. 5. 'Why didn't you tell me about that yesterday, Peter?' Jane asked. 6. 'Would you please wait in the lounge till your flight number is called?' she said. 7. 'I gave you my textbook last week. I insist,' Tom said. 8. 'Could you speak more slowly, please? I can't understand,' he said to me. 9. 'I hope you have a good journey,' he said, 'Don't forget to send a card when you arrive.' 10. 'I'm sorry I didn't phone you earlier. I was very busy,' Jill said to me. 11. 'It's not true! I have never been arrested!' Larry said. 12. 'Why not decorate your baby's room?' Ann said, 'If you like, I'll help you do the decorating, Sue.' 13. 'You pressed the wrong button,' said the mechanic. 14. 'Can you answer the phone? I'm having shower!' he said to his son. 15. 'Would you like a cup of coffee?' I said to Jim. 'No, thanks. I must go now,' he said. III/. Rewrite these sentences, using reported speech with Infinitive or Gerund. 1. “You're always making terrible mistakes,” said the teacher. (COMPLAIN) → 2. “Each of you may have one piece of candy,” Mrs. Jones said to the children. (ALLOW) → 3. “Would you mind if I brought a friend to the party?” said Peter. (ASK) → 4. “Don't be so disappointed Jane. You can take the driving test again,” said Helen. (ENCOURAGE) → 5. “Don’t be late, Katie,” said Mathew. (REMIND) → 6. “Would you like some coffee, Mike?” (OFFER) → 7. “Could you please wait here until your name is called?” (ASK) → 8. “Why not participate in the English Speaking Contest?” (SUGGEST) → 9. “Please watch your steps as you get off.” (WARN)

(PROPOSE) → 18. “Would you like to come to my birthday party next Sunday?” she said. (INVITE) → 19. “Take your seat”, he said. “Thank”, I said. (TELL/ THANK) → 20. “Have a nice weekend, dear”, my Mum said to me. (WISH) →
