Many students believe that math is an inherited ability - either they have the math gene or they don’t. However, a recent research shows that inborn talent might not be as important as we think. In the long run, the most successful students are often those who work the hardest, not those with the highest IQs. These students believe that perseverance, not an innate gift, is the key to achievement. In her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, Carol Dweck argues that a positive mindset is what makes some students push themselves when others give up. Students with a “fixed mindset” believe that they were born with a certain set of talents. They see challenges as a sign that they’ve reached the limit of their natural ability, and they stop trying. On the contrary, students with a “growth mindset” believe that there are no limits on their potential, and view challenges as a chance to learn and improve. They know that their intelligence can be built through experience and effort, and are not held back by the idea of inborn restrictions. Geoff Colvin delivers a similar message in his book, Talent Is Overrated. He demonstrates that success is almost always the result of what he calls “deliberate practice”, concentrated effort to improve one’s skills through focused effort. Inborn talent might make a difference when a subject is first tackled, but years later, it’s the hard-working children who are the most successful. Kim Callan - a math teacher - agrees: “It is rare for a hard-working student to fail in my class.” Having the right mindset is critical to success. Children need to believe in their ability to overcome challenges through concentrated effort. If you place your child in the right math class and encourage him/her to work hard, there’s no limit to what he/she will be able to accomplish. 86. Which of the following best describes the main idea of this article? A. How to help children control their states of mind B. How to know whether a child’s talent is inborn or acquired C. Ever since a video of a dog on a skateboard appeared on a social networking site, dogs have become involved in more and more unusual sports. The latest is dog surfing, with dogs taking part in major competitions along with their owners. In one recent competition, as many as 60 dogs, ranging in size from very big to extremely small, flew in to a seaside resort in the USA and hit the beach, going out on a stormy day to ride the waves on human-sized surfboards. The dogs wore special life jackets so that they’d be safe if they fell in, and were placed on surfboards on shallow waves. They had ten minutes to show what they could do, and were judged not only on the length of their ride but also their confidence and overall ability. One dog, Mandy has always loved surfing right from the start. She and her owner Jeff surf together almost every day after Jeff finishes work. ‘There’s nothing I've trained her to do,’ says Jeff. ‘She's just a natural. If I pick big waves for her, she just rides them’ When the pair are in the sea, Jeff holds Mandy’s board until the perfect wave arrives and then he lets her go. 'She’s learned to make the board go where she wants, and she won’t go unless it's a good wave - she’ll just wait. Her biggest wave so far has been about 2 metres high, and her longest ride about 100 metres’ Many dogs hop off the board once they reach shallow water, but Mandy’s got style - she always waits till her board's near the beach and then turns herself round on it a couple of times. One of Mandy’s surfing buddies, Ben, is also a star performer. ‘There’s no way I could make him do it if he didn't want to,’ says his owner Julie. ‘You just can’t stop him. If he falls into the water, we pull him out again, and he just shakes himself then runs back in!’ Mandy has also become a film star. When a visiting film crew saw Mandy perform in a surfing contest, they knew she was exactly right for a role in their new film. Several of the other dogs surfing along with Mandy have also got parts as extras in the film, which with the help of computers shows them surfing really enormous waves - although they’d be in trouble if they tried them in real life! Extract from 106. The competition took place on a beach during bad weather. ___ 107. The surfing competition that the article describes was limited to dogs of a certain size. ___ 108. It is the highest peak in North America and the centre of Denali National park. One of America’s greatest wilderness areas, the park has had limited access to visitors, but in spite of this, tourism rose from 6000 visitors in 1950 to over 546,000 visitors 5 in 1990. The increasing popularity of this park is prompting serious discussions about the future use of Denali as well as how to preserve wilderness areas in general. One important issue of land use arises when parts of the National Parks are owned by individuals. In Denali, although most of the land in this vast tract of more than a million acres is owned by the National Park Service, several thousand acres are still privately 10 owned as mining tracts. These mining tracts in Denali were once abundant sources of gold, but they also were sources of heavy metals such as arsenic and lead that polluted rivers and streams. Environmentalists were successful in getting the government to require mining companies to submit statements showing the potential impact of a mining project before they now are allowed to begin mining. Because of this requirement, many individuals 15 closed their mines and some sold their land to the National Park Service. Some land owners, however, are wondering if it is better to sell their land to the government or keep it for possible future use. Tourism in this previously remote area is bound to rise, as more roads are built to provide easier access to the park. This increase in the number of visitors creates a demand for hotels and other real estate development. The economic implications of this 20 are of interest to the land owners, but are dismaying to those interested in preserving the wilderness. 96. What is the primary focus of this passage? A. Controversies over land use in Denali. B. Miners selling their property in Denali. C. Alaska building more roads to Denali. D. Limiting tourist access to Denali. 97. (2.0 points- 0.2/ each) Look at the statements below aboutholidays in and around the city of Norwich in England. Read the text below to decide if each statement is TRUE or FALSE. ARE ZOOS A GOOD THING? Zoos are hugely popular attractions for adults and children alike. But are they actually a good thing? Critics of zoos would argue that animals often suffer physically and mentally by being enclosed. Even the best artificial environments can't come close to matching the space, diversity, and freedom that animals have in their natural habitats. This deprivation causes many zoo animals to become stressed or mentally ill. Capturing animals in the wild also causes much suffering by splitting up families. Some zoos make animals behave unnaturally: for example, marine parks often force dolphins and whales to perform tricks. These mammals may die decades earlier than their wild relatives, and some even try to commit suicide. On the other hand, by bringing people and animals together, zoos have the potential to educate the public about conservation issues and inspire people to protect animals and their habitats. Some zoos provide a safe environment for animals which have been mistreated in circuses, or pets which have been abandoned. Zoos also carry out important research into subjects like animal behavior and how to treat illnesses. 169 | Page Contact - 0971.192.688 for file mp3 and answer key
  16. One of the most important modern functions of zoos is supporting international breeding programs, particularly for endangered species. In the wild, some of the rarest species have difficulty in finding mates and breeding, and they might also be threatened by poachers, loss of their habitat and predators. A good zoo will enable these species to live and breed in a secure environment. In addition, as numbers of some wild species drop, there is an increased danger of populations becoming too genetically similar. Breeding programs provide a safeguard: zoo-bred animals can be released into the wild to increase genetic diversity. However, opponents of zoos say that the vast majority of captive breeding programs do not release animals back into the wild. Surplus animals are sold not only to other zoos but also to circuses or hunting ranches in the US or South Africa, where some people are willing to pay a lot of money for the chance to kill an animal in a fenced enclosure. Often, these animals are familiar with humans and have very little chance of escaping. So, are zoos good for animals or not? Perhaps it all depends on how well individual zoos are managed, and the benefits of zoos can surely outweigh their harmful effects. However, it is understandable that many people believe imprisoning animals for any reason is simply wrong. 106. Modern zoos can offer animals a living environment that is as good as their natural habitats. 107. Dolphins and whales usually live longer in zoos than in the wild. 108. People who have visited zoos are more likely to support animal conservation and protection. 109. Zoos protect animals from being used for scientific research. 110. Endangered animals kept in zoos are less likely to meet a mate and breed. 111. In their natural habitats, animals suffer problems related to human activity. 112. Endangered species often lack genetic diversity in their population. 113. Zoos promote genetic diversity by breeding animals and then releasing them back into the wild. 114. Animals that have been bred in captivity quickly adapt to life in hunting ranches. 115. The author thinks that, on balance, zoos are generally a good thing. SECTION IV. If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius, they will cause a disaster. According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one the biggest mistakes, which ambitious parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of what his parents expect, and will fail. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to children. However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but ambitious in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well – especially if the parents are very supportive of their child. Michael Collins is very lucky. He is crazy about music, and his parents help him a lot by taking him to concerts and arranging private piano and violin lessons for him. They even drive him 50 kilometers twice a week for violin lessons. Michael’s mother knows very little about music, but his father plays the trumpet in a large orchestra. However, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if he is unwilling. Winston Smith, Michael’s friend, however, is not so lucky. Both his parents are successful musicians, and they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be successful as they are and so they enter him for every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he does not win. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always seems quiet and unhappy. 180 | Page Contact - 0971.192.688 for file mp3 and answer key

The creation of the Mount Rushmore monument took 14 years - from 1927 to 1941 - and nearly a million dollars. These were times when money was difficult to come by and many people were jobless. To move more than 400,000 tons of rock, Borglum hired laid-off workers from the closed-down mines in the Black Hills area. He taught these men to dynamite, drill, carve, and finish the granite as they were hanging in mid-air in his specially devised chairs, which had many safety features. Borglum was proud of the fact that no workers were killed or several injured during the years of blasting and carving. During the carving, many changes in the original design had to be made to keep the carved heads free of large fissures that were uncovered. However, not all the cracks could be avoided, so Boiigum concocted a mixture of granite dust, white lead, and linseed oil to fill them. 186 | Page Contact - 0971.192.688 for file mp3 and answer key

Questions 66 – 75 (2.0 points - 0.2/ each) Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question Experts in climatology and other scientists are becoming extremely concerned about the changes to our climate which are taking place. Admittedly, climate changes have occurred on our planet before. For example, there have been several ice ages or glacial periods. These climatic changes, however, were different from the modern ones in that they occurred gradually and, as far as we know, naturally. The changes currently being monitored are said to be the result not of natural causes, but of human activity. Furthermore, the rate of change is becoming alarmingly rapid. The major problem is that the planet appears to be warming up. According to some experts, this warming process, known as global warming, is occurring at a rate unprecedented in the last 10,000 years. The implications for the planet are very serious. Rising global temperatures could give rise to such ecological disasters as extremely high increases in the incidence of flooding and of droughts. These in turn could have a harmful effect on agriculture. It is thought that this unusual warming of the Earth has been caused by so-called greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, being emitted into the atmosphere by car engines and modern industrial processes, for example. Such gases not only add to the pollution of the atmosphere, but also create a greenhouse effect, by which the heat of the sun is trapped. This leads to the warming up of the planet. Politicians are also concerned about climate change and there are now regular summits on the subject, attended by representatives from around 180 of the world’s industrialized countries. Of these summits, the most important took place in Kyoto in Japan in 1997. There it was agreed that the most industrialized countries would try to reduce the volume of greenhouse gas emissions and were given targets for this reduction of emissions. It was also suggested that more forests should be planted to create so-called sinks to absorb greenhouse gases. At least part of the problem of rapid climate change has been caused by too drastic deforestation. Sadly, the targets are not being met. Even more sadly, global warnings about climate changes are often still being regarded as scaremongering. 66. According to the passage, in what way did the climate changes in the ice ages differ from the modern ones? A. They occurred naturally over a long period of time B. They were partly intended. C.
