- Adapted by Trần Ngọc Diên Khánh TIẾNG ANH 11 I-LEARN SMART WORLD SPEAKING TOPICS TOPIC 1: HEALTH AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE Discuss a healthy diet 1. Do you have a healthy diet? *”Yes, I Do” Answers - Yes, I would say my diet is very healthy. I always try to eat lots of vegetables, with lean meats like beef and chicken. I rarely eat sugar. - Yes, I do. I cook for myself whenever I can because I think restaurant meals are quite unhealthy. They use too much sugar and salt. - Yes, I suppose these days my diet is quite healthy. I try to avoid unhealthy food, like hamburgers and pasta. I eat a lot of fruit and drink a lot of water. I always watch what I eat, and I never touch any food that has processed sugar in it. “No, I Don’t” Answers - To be honest, I don’t have a very healthy diet. I eat fast food all the time, but I don’t care because it’s so delicious. I think healthy food doesn’t taste good. - No, I’m afraid the food I usually eat is not very healthy at all. I’m always rushing around after school and I don’t have time to eat at home, so I eat out a lot, which I know isn’t very healthy. - I used to be a very healthy eater, but since I was in grade 10 at high school, I’ve been eating mostly very unhealthy food. I should change my diet back again. “Kind Of” Answers - Yes, I think my diet is somewhat healthy. I eat fruit and vegetables every day. But unfortunately, I have a sweet tooth, so I eat candy every day as well. - I’m not really sure if I’m a healthy eater or not. I eat the same as all my friends, and we’re all quite young and fit and healthy, so I guess my diet is healthy enough. 2. Describe what you think is a healthy diet From my perspective, a healthy diet needs to provide people with a sufficient amount of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, fibers and vitamins. And also, those who follow a healthy diet should eat more in the morning than in lunch and at night because breakfast is the most essential meal during one day. 1
- Adapted by Trần Ngọc Diên Khánh + To follow a healthy diet (verb phrase): to obey the diet that helps to maintain or improve overall health (Tuân theo chế độ ăn uống lành mạnh) 3. Are there many vegetarians in Vietnam? I don’t know the exact number so it’s pretty hard to answer this question but I guess there’re more and more Vietnamese vegetarians these days. In modern society, when numerous kinds of diseases emerge, people have a vegetarian diet to protect themselves from suffering from obesity, diabetes, or other fatal diseases. + To emerge (verb): to appear (Xuất hiện) + Fatal (adj): causing or ending in death ( Chết người) 4. Why do you think some people choose to be vegetarians? Well, there are two main reasons for being vegetarians. One of them may be that some people acknowledge the importance of eating a lot of vegetables and fruits, which provide people with all nutrients and vitamins to keep them active. Also, becoming a vegetarian is one way to prevent the brutal treatment of animals and promote a more humane way of eating. + Brutal treatment (noun phrase): the violent and cruel way of behaving toward someone/something (Sự đối xử tàn nhẫn) + Acknowledge (verb): to accept that something is true ( thừa nhận) + To promote (verb): to help something to happen or develop (Tăng cường) + Humane (adj): showing kindness towards people and animals by making sure that they do not suffer more than is necessary (Có tính nhân đạo) 5. Is the food that people eat today in Vietnam different from the food that people used to eat in the past? (if yes, in what ways has it changed?) Throughout the centuries, Vietnamese people have maintained their traditional foods, such as Chung cake, spring rolls, noodles, and so on. But in the globalization era, many kinds of exotic dishes have been introduced to Vietnamese cuisine, and also with the development of technology like 2
- Adapted by Trần Ngọc Diên Khánh microwaves, electronic grills, the food we eat today can be more hygienically cooked and the taste may have changed a little bit. + Exotic (adj): from or in another country ( Nước ngoài) + Electronic grill (noun): a metal frame that is used to cook food over hot coals or an open fire (Bếp nướng bằng điện) + Hygienically cooked (adj): st is cooked in a way that is clean and keeps things free of bacteria and is therefore unlikely to spread disease (Được nấu sạch sẽ hơn) 6. How do you think the way we eat will change in the future? In my opinion, more and more people will have a vegetarian diet because of the reasons I’ve just mentioned previously. Another thing is that people may utilize modern technological appliances more in the kitchen to help them save a great deal of time and energy. Last but not least, eating out may also become a more popular option, especially for those who are really busy because of the rising living standard. + To utilize (verb): to use something, especially for a practical purpose ( Tận dụng) + Technological appliance (noun): device/machine involving technology ( Thiết bị gia dụng hiện đại) 7. How do you keep yourself healthy? Honestly, to maintain good health, I focus on 2 things including a proper diet and doing exercises on a regular basis. To be more specific, I avoid eating junk food and increase the consumption of vegetables, and I hit the gym 3 days a week. + to maintain good health: duy trì sức khỏe + a proper diet: chế độ ăn hợp lý + consumption of vegetables: sự tiêu thụ rau củ + to hit the gym: đến phòng tập gym 3
- Adapted by Trần Ngọc Diên Khánh 8. Do you think you have a balanced diet? Well, to be honest, to some extent, I would say yes. To keep myself in shape, I try not to eat junk foods at all costs and consume an adequate amount of macronutrients. The reason behind this is that the balance between protein, fat, and carbohydrates allows my body to function properly, while junk foods just lead to cardiovascular diseases. + to keep oneself in shape: giữ dáng + at all costs: bằng bất cứ giá nào + be adequate: đầy đủ + macronutrients: chất dinh dưỡng đa lượng + cardiovascular diseases: bệnh tim mạch 9. How do you manage stress in life? From my perspective, stress is one kind of mental health problem which poses a threat to us. Therefore, managing and avoiding it is necessary if we want to lead a healthy lifestyle. To do so, I have to maintain positive thinking, exercise more to refresh my mind and consult doctors whenever I feel stressed. + poses a threat to someone/something: đe dọa ai hoặc cái gì + to lead a healthy lifestyle: sống một cuộc sống khỏe mạnh + maintain positive thinking: duy trì suy nghĩ tích cực 10. Do you have any unhealthy habits? + Well, I bet everyone is guilty of excessively indulging themselves to some extent and I’m not an exception. Being a gamer and a night owl prevent me from going to bed early. So yea, pulling an all nighter seems normal to me. + be guilty of: có lỗi trong việc gì + excessively indulging themselves (+ indulge oneself / somebody with sth): quá nuông chiều bản thân + exception: ngoại lệ + to pull an all nighter: thức cả đêm 4
- Adapted by Trần Ngọc Diên Khánh 11. In what ways do you try to stay healthy? My favorite quote when it comes to my health is “You are what you eat”. This means your diet directly leads to your health prospect. Thus, I try my best to eat right by investing time and effort in researching what to eat for the entire week and devising a personal healthy diet plan. So far, it’s worked for me regarding staying healthy. + health prospect: sức khỏe trong tương lai + to devise: tạo ra (kế hoạch) 12. Is it easy to keep fit where you live? Gladly, the answer is a solid yes. Within the vicinity of my neighborhood, you can easily find many gyms or health centers, not to mention healthy food stores. However, whether it is easy for you or not to keep fit does not entirely depend on the available amenities but on your perseverance and consistency. + vicinity of something: trong vùng lận cận của something + amenity: tiện ích + perseverance: sự kiên trì + consistency: tính nhất quán 13. What do you think is more important, eating healthy or doing exercises? From my standpoint, it is best to balance these 2 activities to achieve long-lasting results. However, I’m sided with doing exercises as a more vital option. This is because when you are working out, you will have the tendency to eat more healthily as you don’t want your efforts to be fruitless. + long-lasting results: kết quả lâu dài + vital: quan trọng + tendency to do something: có xu hướng làm gì + fruitless: vô nghĩa 14. What are the health benefits of playing a sport? Playing sports has numerous health benefits. Physical activity can help you gain muscle and boost metabolism more effectively. Sports can provide both mental and physical well-being. Participation in sports and other physical activities has a considerable impact on the human body. + numerous: rất nhiều 5
- Adapted by Trần Ngọc Diên Khánh + boost metabolism: tăng cường trao đổi chất + mental and physical well-being: sức khỏe tinh thân và thể chất TOPIC 2: GENERATION GAP # Fashion 1. What types of clothes do you like to wear? Well, it depends. When I go to school, I always try to look sharp. But, if I’m just hanging out with my friends or taking a leisurely stroll, I have a particular liking for smart casual clothes, especially white shirts and black skirts. It’s a perfect combination because it allows me to feel comfortable and classy at the same time. 2. What kind of clothes do you never wear? I absolutely hate leisure suit ( đồ vét mặc đi chơi của nam giới). They say it’s supposed to be comfortable. I really don’t know why they say that. I get all hot and sweaty in it. I’d rather just go out in a T-shirt and shorts. 3. What’s your favourite color for clothes? Answer 1: I’m more into black, white, and grey simply because they’re neutral colors which means they work well with other colors. Besides, I lack fashion sense, so wearing clothes with neutral colors saves me from making poor choices of color matching. Answer 2: Well, bright colors always tickle my fancy, especially baby blue and bright pink. To be honest with you, my wardrobe is full of yellow, blue and light pink. Those colors always give me a boost of energy and brighten my days. 4. Do you enjoy buying clothes? Yes, like most young people, I was a slave of fashion and I’d always have to buy must-have T-shirts or pairs of shoes which were fashionable or trendy. I’m not so bothered now though I still want to be on trend. I wouldn’t feel comfortable when wearing something old-fashioned but I don’t take pride in my appearance as much as I used to be. 5. Do you think the brand of clothing is important? Personally, I don’t really care about the brand of clothing as long as what I buy has a good quality. Famous brands coming from fashion houses are usually too expensive for me so I will rarely buy them. Often I can find inexpensive brands with the same quality which are mostly off the peg ( quần áo may sẵn). 6
- Adapted by Trần Ngọc Diên Khánh 6. What kind of clothes do people in your country usually wear? I live in a tropical country, so people in my country usually wear clothes with light fabrics. In summer, we opt for light-colored clothes so that we can avoid the heat but in the winter, the weather is usually freezing cold, so a thick coat, a wool scarf or a sweater become our common choices. 7. Do your friends wear the same kinds of clothes as you? Well, I think that wearing style reflects our personalities. For that reason, my friends and I always wear different kinds of clothes even we get on with each other very well. Some of my friends are fashionistas that they are the slaves of fashion and always keep up with the latest world fashion trend. They also have a good sense of style and buy must-have items. By contrast, I prefer classic clothes which are a little bit old fashion or simple styles such as jeans or shirts. However, we respect others and think that we have different eyes for fashion. 8. Do you wear different styles of clothes now compared to 10 years ago? Well, I can say that there haven’t been many changes with the clothes I wear now with that of about 10 years ago because I am not the person who is always on trend. I still wear regular jeans and shirts for casual days or formal clothes for business events. But I think since the trend has changed, it seems to affect me a little bit especially in terms of jeans. I used to wear jeans flares but now I prefer slim- fit clothes. 9. Have you ever worn a uniform? Yes, absolutely. Wearing uniform is kind of the norm in my country. Students are often dressed in a plain white button-up shirt and a pair of navy slacks, and the shirt has to be tucked in. I gotta say I liked it because I didn’t have to stand in front of the mirror fussing over what to wear to school. 10. Do you think the clothes we wear say something about who we are? Well, I believe that what we wear reflects our personalities and characteristics. If you are a slave of fashion, you totally have tendency to buy must-have items because you want to follow the latest fashion trend. You always get dressed up and take a pride in your appearance when you go out. By contrast, if you prefer being simple you tend to choose casual clothes which give you flexibility and comfort. # Family 1.What are your parents like? Now, I only have a single-parent, who is a loving and caring mother. She is always willing to listen to my stories for hours and gives various useful pieces of advice. In addition, I used to have both parents before my father passed away. As far as I can remember, he was rather strict and tended to act in a distant manner, so I don’t have much memory of being around him. + strict (adj) nghiêm khắc + distant (adj) xa cách, lạnh lùng 7
- Adapted by Trần Ngọc Diên Khánh 2. Do you get along well with your family? Yes, of course. I just love hanging out with my mother, aunt and uncle as well as my cousins, for it is always so pleasant to be around them. For example, we often eat out at our favorite dining places, then have a love karaoke night or go to the movies together. Simple but comforting. + comforting (adj) thư giãn, dễ chịu 3. Who are you closest to in your family? My answer is really obvious: my mother. Since I was young, I have spent most of my time around her because I have always been a cry-baby and mama’s boy. Now, as a high school student, I have less spare time, so I treasure my time being with her even more. This may sound obscure to many people, but I rarely hide anything from her. + cry-baby (n) người mít ướt + mama’s boy (n) người bám váy mẹ + treasure (v) trân trọng + obscure (adj) mơ hồ, lạ lùng 4. Which member of your family are you most similar to? Well, this is really tricky for I’m not exactly similar to any family members. For example, I’m said to be a warm-hearted, friendly and kind of a good listener, and that’s because I inherit those traits from my mother. On the other hand, in terms of appearance, I may take after my father because many people say that I look a lot like him. +warm-hearted (adj) ấm áp + good listener (n) người hay lắng nghe + inherit (v) thừa kế + trait (n) đặc điểm + take after (v) trông giống 5. What do you think about the differences between families in the past and today, and what have caused these changes? In the past, there were several children in a family. But now, government has issued ‘two-child policy’ to limit the size of the family. So, there are only one child or two children in a family. 6. What is your opinion of ‘two-child policy’? I agree with two-child policy. In fact, if we don’t apply this policy, we don’t have enough food and education to provide for a large number of people. So, government must control the population. Also, it is the best way that we can find to control population. 7.What has your government done to support families? Our government has issued many policies such as student loans. It means that our government supports the students from poor families to continue their schooling and improve their education 8
- Adapted by Trần Ngọc Diên Khánh conditions. In addition, our government gives charity houses to old people having more difficulties or no families to take care of them. 8. How have family structures changed in Vietnam? Are the changes for better or worse? Family structures in Vietnam have considerably changed in recent years. In the past, extended families were popular, each family had more than two children. But now, nuclear families with one child or two children are popular. And I think the changes are good for our society. 9. What do you think the main problem of family life in Vietnam these days? In my opinion, the main problem of family life in Vietnam these days is that parents don’t spend their much time on their children. They’re busy with work, so children don’t get more care from their parents. As a result, many children become autistic or commit a crime. TOPIC 3: SOCIAL ISSUES # Changes to town; 1. Let’s talk about your hometown. Where is your hometown? * My dwelling is in Hanoi. It is one of the most outstanding tourist attractions of Vietnam. To talk about this city, I suppose this place is heading to “megacity” as it is densely populated with 8.5 residents according to the latest report in 2022. Moreover, it has become the largest city in Vietnam. + Dwelling (n): nơi ở + Megacity (n): thành phố lớn + Densely populated (adj phr): đông dân * Well, my hometown is Da Nang city, which is on the central coast of Vietnam. In my opinion, it is an ideal city to live in thanks to its unique culinary culture with beautiful natural landscapes. 2. What do you like most about your hometown? Hanoi is dynamic since more foreign investors are coming in, hence more job opportunities for the inhabitants here, especially the youngsters who are sharp with new trends. That is what I like most in this city because it seems like I will never be jobless if I live here. + Dynamic (adj): năng động + Inhabitant (noun): người dân + Sharp (adj): nhanh nhạy + Jobless (adj): thất nghiệp 9
- Adapted by Trần Ngọc Diên Khánh 3. What do you not like about it? The problem of big cities is most likely the overload situation of every system. For example, the hospital is always overcrowded with patients, up to the point when people have to reserve an appointment for a week later to meet doctors. What’s more, the number of students in a classroom in public schools is about 50 people. This leads to a scenario where parents have to scramble to get a position for their children. I feel like living in Hanoi forces me to be in a situation when I always have to fight for my basic rights. + Overload (n): sự quá tải + Overcrowded (adj): quá đông + Reserve (v): đặt trước + Scramble (v): tranh giành 4. Would you prefer to live somewhere else? (Why)? Sometimes, when I’m distressed about life, I think of moving to Quy Nhon to live. It’s about over 1000 km away from Hanoi. The reason why I choose this place is first, I want to seek escapism from the hectic pace of life. Second, the sea is a tranquil place to walk, where I can free my negative thoughts or worries. + Distressed (adj): cực kỳ căng thẳng + Escapism (n): khuynh hướng thoát khỏi thực tế + Tranquil (adj): yên bình + Free (v): giải phóng 5. Describe your hometown. My hometown is Tuy Hoa, a small city. It is both traditional and modern because of having several festivals celebrated by the locals, and at the same time, the increasing number of infrastructures and establishments makes it start to be developed. 6. Where is your hometown located in? My hometown, Tuy Hoa is a small city in the Central region of Vietnam. 7. Is it easy to visit around your hometown? Yes, it is. It is a small city but there are a lot of kinds of transportation available like: bus, motobike, car, etc. Especially, we also have Tuy Hoa Airport, so you can travel around the country by plane. 8. What do people in your town usually do? In my hometown, Inhabitant usually do agriculture and fishing. Also, with the latest modernization, numerous office jobs have appeared in my town. 10
- Adapted by Trần Ngọc Diên Khánh 9. What do you like most about your hometown? To be honest, I would say I like everything. But what I like the most maybe its privilege in natural landscapes. I mean my city is well-known for having incredible sceneries everywhere from the fine sandy beaches to the east to green chilling forests to the west. 10.What do you not like about it? Frankly speaking, I dislike the slow pace of life in my city. For a young, dynamic, active person like me, my hometown is not an ideal place for me to expand my horizons or find a better job opportunity. That’s why I really want to move to Ho Chi Minh city after high school. However, I still think Quy Nhon is a perfect place for vacationers who would only stay for a few days. # Social issues which affect teenagers I. Drug abuse and addiction in children Some people in some countries in the world use drugs, and today’s youth are experimenting with illegal drugs at an early age. Some sociologists claim that some members of society often set a bad example. Discuss the cause and effects of widespread drug abuse by young people and the reason why teenagers are becoming drug addicts. What are the causes of this unhealthy development? Suggest some measures to fight this menace (mối đe dọa). 1. Causes The first reason is the absence of adult supervision during childhood, which pushes children in vulnerable situations to drug abuse. Secondly, the pressure from the youngsters’ peers leads them to a desire of proving themselves that they are an adult now. They tend to try drugs even to avoid being bullied. 11
Lastly, it is because of adverse influences from people in their neighborhood that lead children into using drugs. If a child is surrounded by drug addicts, then it is very likely that he or she may grow up becoming another addict. Solutions Initially, parents need to set a good example for their children to follow because they are the most influential people to them. Secondly, schools should provide children with both educational and recreational activities, helping them engaged in a healthy lifestyle and get away from illegal activities. Schools also play a vital role in providing students with essential knowledge and educating children about the dangers of drug abuse. VOCABULARY + drug abuse/ addiction (compound noun): The habitual taking of illegal drugs (Sự lạm dụng/ nghiện ma túy) + vulnerable (adjective): Exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally ( Dễ bị tổn thương) + peer (noun): A person who is the same age or has the same social position or the same abilities as other people in a group (Bạn bè đồng trang lứa) + set a good example (verb phrase) = set a good role model: To behave in a way that other people should copy (Làm gương) 12
- Adapted by Trần Ngọc Diên Khánh II. POVERTY Every country has poor people and every country has different ways of dealing with the poor. What are some of the reasons for poverty? What can we do to help the poor? All over the world, the rich are becoming richer and the poor are becoming poorer. What problems does this cause? How can we overcome the problems of poverty? 1. Causes Personally, education is the one that has enabled many people to overcome poverty, some poor countries are those who lack sufficient education among their population. Moreover, the regions of the world that are vulnerable to catastrophic natural disasters as floods or droughts can suffer from significant obstacles to eradicate poverty. For example, the effects of flooding in Bangladesh or the 2005 earthquake in Haiti devastated their economic status, which put them into poverty. Finally, it is clear that war and political instability are important reasons for poverty. Without safety, stability, and security, economic prosperity and growth cannot be ensured, which leads to the poverty of the whole country. Solutions Firstly, it is vital to provide equal education for all citizens to ensure that they are well-educated with basic knowledge and skills. (Thứ nhất, quan trọng là phải có nền giáo dục bình đẳng cho mọi công dân, để họ được giáo dục tốt với kiến thức và kĩ năng) Secondly, creating jobs is a great way to reduce poverty. When people have jobs, they have income, and when people have income, they can more easily get themselves out of poverty.
- Adapted by Trần Ngọc Diên Khánh VOCABULARY + poverty (noun): The state of being extremely poor (Sự nghèo đói) + sufficient education (noun phrase): Adequate education and training (Sự giáo dục đầy đủ) + eradicate (verb): To destroy completely; put an end to (Chấm dứt) + devastate (verb): To destroy or ruin (Phá hủy) + economic status (noun phrase): A situation related to finance or money (Tình trạng kinh tế) + political instability (noun phrase): The state of being unstable in terms of government (Bất ổn chính trị) + economic prosperity (noun phrase):The state of being successful and having a lot of money (Sự thịnh vượng kinh tế) + income (noun): Money received, especially on a regular basis, for work or through investments (Thu nhập) 14
